About Montagnards
The term Montagnard refers to a group of people from the mountainous regions of Vietnam. It is of French origin, based on the word montagne (which means mountain in English), and typically translates into mountain people. Montagnards served as American allies during the Vietnam War, working with the 5th Special Forces to protect the highlands from being captured by North Vietnam. The term Montagnard collectively refers to approximately 30 different tribes, each with their own language, religions and culture.
Many of the Montagnards have sought refuge in countries such as the United States, France, Australia and others. There are many living in North Carolina, specifically in western areas of the state.
